Mixed Berry Smoothie: Ingredient Breakdown
I’m sure the majority of you have made a smoothie before so instead of going through all the steps, I wanted to do a specific ingredient breakdown. The reason I love this smoothie so much is because it is packed full of nutrients. Not only does this smoothie contain berries which are super high in vitamins and antioxidants, it also contains powerhouse foods such as bananas, spinach, chia seeds, and flaxseed.
Blueberries
The first berry featured in this recipe is blueberries. Not only blueberries delicious and satisfying, they are also packed full of awesome nutrients. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, which help to protect us against diseases such as cancer. They also have been studied for their role in protecting against high blood pressure and heart disease.
Blueberries are great sources of:
- fiber
- vitamin C
- vitamin K
- manganese
Vitamin C is beneficial in this recipe because it helps to absorb the iron from the spinach in this smoothie.
Strawberries
Berry number two is strawberries, which are by far one of my all-time favorite fruits. Strawberries are rich in fiber and phytochemicals, making them another beneficial food to add to our diets.
Strawberries are great sources of:
- vitamin C
- manganese
- potassium
- folate
Blackberries
Berry number three is blackberries.
Blackberries are great sources of:
- vitamin C
- fiber
- vitamin K
- manganese
Spinach
I have talked about spinach so many times before because it is a powerhouse food!! Spinach really packs a punch when it comes to nutrition. Also, the three berries in this smoothie high the taste and color of this vegetable, making it the perfect ingredient to sneak in to get some additional health benefits.
Spinach is a good source of:
- vitamin A
- vitamin C
- iron
- calcium
- folate
- vitamin K
Spinach has long been studied for its role in preventing cancer, heart disease, and boosting our immune system.
Bananas
I pretty much always add a banana to my smoothies. First of all, they are also packed with so many awesome nutrients. A banana a day keeps the doctor away right? Isn’t that the saying? Or is it apple? Anywaysss bananas are great. I try to eat a banana a day regardless of if it keeps the doctor away. Secondly, they work great in smoothies to sweeten the flavor and to help hide the taste of any veggies. Since berries have a slight bitterness to them, adding a banana to this smoothie really helps to balance the flavor.
Bananas are good sources of:
- potassium
- vitamin C
- magnesium
- fiber
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are another food that I try to eat every day. They are a great source of plant-based omega-3s, protein, and fiber. I typically add them in smoothies or oatmeal to sneak them in.
Chia seeds are good source of:
- omega-3s
- fiber
- calcium
- antioxidants
- manganese
- magnesium
- iron
Flax Seed
Like chia seeds, flaxseeds are another nutrient-dense food you should aim to eat every day. They are also loaded with omega-3s, protein, and fiber. They have been studied for their role in cancer prevention and are awesome to add, especially if you are plant-based.
Flaxseed is rich in:
- omega-3s
- protein
- iron
- calcium
I hope you enjoyed this nutrient breakdown of a mixed berry smoothie! I’m wanting to do more of these to show you have nutrient-rich plant-based foods are!
To summarize, this smoothie is rich in:
- vitamin C
- iron
- calcium
- protein
- fiber
- antioxidants
- phytochemicals
